IWIL Vice President's Tribute to ATHENA Award Winner

8/5/2026

Congratulations again to Heather Burton, this year's ATHENA recipient!

Many of you know Heather through the recent announcements and publications celebrating this well-deserved honor. Some of you also know that I've had the privilege of working alongside her for several years. Not only is she an incredible CEO, but she's also an amazing friend. I'd like to share something that wasn't in the press.

Heather and I have both served at Central Counties Health Centers (CCHC) in different roles over the years. We've each taken a hiatus to work elsewhere, only to realize that CCHC is where our hearts truly belong. While I was away, Heather stepped into the CEO role. She reached out and asked if I wanted to come back "home." I didn't hesitate, and I've been grateful to be back in my current role ever since.

Shortly after I returned, Heather invited me to be her guest at a luncheon. Of course I said yes—who turns down good food? She simply told me it was an Illinois Women in Leadership event. I had no idea that one invitation would change so much.
I walked into that room knowing no one and was immediately welcomed with open arms by a group of women I honestly felt were out of my league. Years later, I can look back and say that luncheon marked the beginning of an incredible new chapter in my life. It introduced me to inspiring women, meaningful opportunities, and friendships that I will always treasure.

Heather, thank you for seeing potential in others, for lifting people up, and for leading with authenticity and heart. Your impact extends far beyond your title, and this recognition is so well deserved.

Congratulations again! We are all so proud of you and everything you've accomplished. You truly embody what the ATHENA Award represents.
